Reclaim Your Wholeness

Do you ever feel conflicted, with parts of you pushing in opposite directions? Harsh self-criticism battles unhealthy escapes—it's a struggle for control. Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy offers a path to healing and wholeness.

Embracing Your Inner Family

IFS views the mind as a system of interconnected parts, each with unique thoughts, feelings, and needs. These parts, as IFS creator Richard Schwartz, PhD teaches, can sometimes be painful to encounter or act in ways that are unhelpful, and even harmful, but they are well-intentioned. Shunning them, even the self-critic or one that holds out suicide as a solution, only brings more inner alienation. Dr Schwartz came to understand that parts come in 3 flavors:

  • Exiled Parts: These are wounded parts that have been shut down or hidden away to protect you from further pain. They often remain unseen but can manifest indirectly through emotional outbursts, addictive behaviors, or physical symptoms.

  • Manager Parts: These try to control your behavior and protect you from the pain of the wounded exiles. They adopt coping strategies like self-criticism, giving up hope, working hard, and people-pleasing aimed to prevent the exiles from feeling their wounds. Unfortunately, they are so protective they often backfire.

  • “Fire Fighter” Parts: These act quickly without forethought to extinguish the flames when parts are in acute distress.  They rescue by distracting or numbing: binging on food or sex, drinking, drugs, shopping, porn, or other internet rabbit holes.  When activated they can leave a person feeling out of control or grieving wasted time, trust, or resources.

Leading with Your “Self”

In IFS therapy, you'll collaborate with a trained therapist to:

  • Connect with your inner family: Through guided inner exploration you'll discover your different parts, understand their roles, and the underlying needs driving their behaviors. This fosters self-awareness and a deeper appreciation for the complexity of your inner world.

  • Discover your “Self”: The “Self” is the core of your being that is naturally compassionate, wise, and courageous. Awareness of Self energy is simply the awareness of the self you have always had, not anything you need to become or work on. It’s the energy you feel when you breathe deeply and slowly; when your natural curiosity is piqued; when you open your heart to another or to your own inner experience. Some might define it as “spirit”, others as “Buddha nature”, and others as our true nature. When cultivated, Self can lead your internal system with clarity, confidence, and empathy, guiding your parts toward healthy expression and collaboration.

  • Bringing compassion to all parts: All parts, even the "difficult" ones, are trying to help you in their own way. Extreme parts often took on emotional burdens or extreme roles when they were young.  They often feel and act as if they are young; that is without much perspective.  They usually don’t know that you’ve grown up and have the power to heal them or manage their concerns with more skill.  When parts believe that you understand them and they can trust your “Self” you can build a sense of inner peace and connection.

  • Unburden your wounded parts: Identifying and understanding the plight of different parts; hearing their biography from the energy of Self helps heal their emotional pain. This involves releasing past burdens.  Once free of their burdens and trust that the Self can lead, they naturally adopt more functional roles and can resolve internal differences.
